Like any insurance, it’s good to check-in from time-to-time to make sure your cover is still the best fit for you. To ensure you’re still covered for everything you need and don’t get sprung with unexpected costs or surprises later, we’ve compiled a few questions to consider when reviewing your health fund and cover:

Q: Does my hospital cover satisfy Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading and Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) requirements?

If you have chosen not to continue with or to downgrade your hospital cover, you may have to pay the MLS if you are a high-income earner or pay the LHC loading when you take out hospital cover again in the future, which means you could end up paying more for your cover.

All levels of Phoenix Health hospital cover satisfy these requirements.

Q: Will I have access to a Medical Access Gap Cover Scheme?

Phoenix Health have a network of over 36,000 doctors who participate in our Access Gap Scheme which can reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs should you need to go to hospital.

Even if you’re not planning a hospital admission, it’s still good to have all the information.

Q: What benefits and services are excluded or restricted?

Knowing what you are (and aren’t) covered for now means you won’t get caught out down the track. Some hospital covers provide restricted benefits which can mean minimal benefits or benefits only in a public hospital for selected services, so a full understanding of any cover you’re considering is key.

Q: Do you have preferred providers?

Some health funds pay higher benefits for using their own providers, for example BUPA have their own dental clinics and Medibank Private have a list of Members’ Choice providers. But often their providers may be outside your local area, not the practitioner who is already treating you or who you’d like to see.

With all Phoenix Health extras covers, your preferred provider is ours too. You’re free to choose who treats you, and wherever you go you’ll receive the same great benefits.

Do the sums

Sometimes the cheapest cover isn’t the most economical or the best fit for your lifestyle. If you’re someone who wears glasses, regularly visits the physio and makes the most of Phoenix Health’s gap free preventative dental, it’s likely that you’ll get more back on your current cover and therefore pay less for health services and premiums over a 12-month period than if you had a cheaper cover because the benefits and included services likely won’t be as extensive.
