Sharon Waterhouse Phoenix Health Fund

International Women’s Day is a day to come together to celebrate, empower and inspire women.

Innovative and inspiring, Sharon Waterhouse joined Phoenix Health as Chief Executive Officer in 2014 and has guided the fund through the exciting transition of health fund for Australian steel workers and their families, to the open health fund we know today.

Passionate about members health and her home city of Newcastle, Sharon is also a member of several boards in the health and finance industry and has previously served as an Elected Councillor of the City of Newcastle.

In honour of International Women’s Day 2020, we sat down with Sharon, and spoke about what International Women’s Day means to her and what has driven her small town childhood dreams, to become CEO of a national company, and the successful business woman she is today.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

I see International Women’s Day as a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and provide inspiration to empower them to pursue their dreams.

What has made the biggest difference to your career?

Taking risks. I started saying yes to opportunities I wouldn’t ordinarily; I volunteered for things outside of my comfort zone and really pushed myself into stepping up for any challenge.

I worked on self-development and started reading books and setting goals, and then actively put plans into place to achieve those goals. Also, by identifying some key people who I could see as being role models, and seeking their influence, I was able to learn and draw from experiences that I otherwise may never have been exposed to.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Seek out mentors and people who are willing to share their knowledge with you. And just get as much experience as you can – try and do different things, take on responsibilities and run with every opportunity presented to you.

What’s the best advice you can give to aspiring businesswomen?

Don’t work for money. Work for a greater purpose.
